The University of Vienna is the oldest university in the German-speaking world. Currently about 91,000 students are enrolled at the university in one of the 188 study programs. With a staff of 6,700 academic personnel the University of Vienna aims to sustain a wide range of studies, but at the same time to promote new and innovative fields of research, and to establish new networks between subjects.

The Research Group Knowledge Engineering, a part of the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Vienna, focuses on cutting-edge research aiming to provide transparent, ubiquitous knowledge that can be semantically processed by IT systems. Based on mathematical and statistical foundations, theoretical approaches are adapted and applied. The fundamental research paradigm relies on concepts of meta-modeling that are further developed and deployed to provide transparent knowledge with formal and semi-formal modeling methods and to derive structured knowledge out of unstructured data. The group provides novel research results in the areas of Meta Modeling, Meta Data and Ontologies, Hybrid Method Engineering and Business Intelligence. The realized results are applied primarily in information systems for all types of organizations.

The research group’s activities encompass teaching Business Informatics and related subjects, research in the field of meta-modeling, scientific publications and conferences, as well as the OMiLaboratory. The group has extensive experience in implementing EU- and nationally-funded research and applications projects; EU-projects to be named are REFINE, ADVISOR, plugIT, ComVantage, INNOTRAIN IT, while a selection of nationally funded projects is represented by eduBITE, eduWeaver, Semantic Culture Guide and Open Models.
